What to know before choosing a plan
Plain-language information, designed to help you compare meaningful differences.
Who needs visitors to Canada medical insurance?
Visitor medical insurance can be useful for tourists, parents on regular visitor visas, friends and relatives visiting Canada, eligible new arrivals waiting for provincial coverage, and some Canadians returning from abroad. Product eligibility differs by resident status and insurer.
A regular visitors policy may be purchased for the expected stay, subject to plan rules. A Super Visa application is different: it has its own federal minimum coverage requirements. Do not confuse these two insurance categories.
What emergency treatment may be covered?
Depending on the specific contract, emergency hospital treatment, physician services, diagnostics, ambulance transportation, prescription medication linked to an eligible emergency and repatriation may be covered within the policy limit.
Benefits are subject to definitions, pre-authorization rules, exclusions and maximums. Not every fever, dental problem or medical visit qualifies. Non-emergency services, routine monitoring and elective care are commonly excluded.
Buying after arrival and waiting periods
Visitors insurance purchased after arriving in Canada may contain a sickness waiting period. An illness beginning during the waiting period may remain excluded even if treatment happens later. Insurers also have different rules for extensions and recent symptoms.
Whenever possible, arrange coverage before travel. If a visitor is already in Canada, disclose the actual arrival date and current health status before selecting a plan.
What to compare before you buy
Look beyond premium: compare the total benefit maximum, deductible type, medical stability period, eligibility questionnaire, age limits, emergency-assistance requirements and cancellation terms.
For a short trip, the policy end date matters. For longer visits or extensions, ask how new medical conditions during an earlier coverage period will be treated under a renewed policy.
