What Super Visa insurance is required in Canada in 2026?
IRCC requires an eligible health insurance policy providing at least CAD $100,000 in emergency coverage, valid for a minimum of one year from entry, and covering health care, hospitalization and repatriation. The policy must be issued by a qualifying insurer and be paid in full or through an eligible deposit-and-instalment arrangement. A quote alone is not sufficient.
Read official IRCC insurance requirements Link to answerCan Super Visa insurance be paid monthly?
Yes. IRCC accepts qualifying policies paid in instalments with a deposit. Monthly payment options depend on the insurer and plan; confirm the deposit, future instalments, fees, policy cancellation consequences and the issued documentation. Simply selecting “monthly” on a quote screen does not prove the policy was purchased.
Compare current plans Link to answerDoes the policy have to be from a Canadian insurance company?
Not always. IRCC accepts insurance from Canadian insurers and certain qualifying insurers outside Canada. For a foreign insurer, IRCC requires OSFI authorization to provide accident and sickness insurance and issuance of the policy while doing insurance business in Canada, among other conditions. An ordinary overseas travel policy should not be assumed eligible.
Verify foreign insurer conditions Link to answerDo I need to buy Super Visa insurance before applying?
You generally need to submit proof of an issued qualifying policy with the Super Visa application. Before purchase, check visa-refusal refunds and effective-date change rules, which differ by insurer. A price estimate is not accepted as insurance proof.
See the required documents Link to answerIs the minimum $100,000 enough, or should I compare $150,000 and $200,000?
CAD $100,000 is the immigration minimum, not a personalized recommendation. Some families compare $150,000 or $200,000 because Canadian emergency care can be expensive. Compare the additional premium, deductible, maximum benefit, medical exclusions and the traveller’s situation rather than using the limit alone.
Compare limits online Link to answerDoes my parent need insurance for all five years of a Super Visa stay?
The initial policy must be valid for at least one year from entry. IRCC advises renewing insurance if it expires before the traveller leaves Canada, and requires valid proof on every entry. One purchased year is not five years of continuous medical coverage.
IRCC stay duration guidance Link to answerHow long can parents and grandparents stay on a Super Visa?
For applications made on or after June 22, 2023, Super Visa holders are generally eligible to stay up to five years per entry, subject to admissibility and immigration conditions. Rules differ for some earlier applications. The duration of a visa and the duration of an insurance policy are different.
Confirm rules for your application date Link to answerWhat changed in Super Visa income rules on March 31, 2026?
IRCC introduced alternative ways of meeting the host financial requirement, including assessing income in either of the two preceding taxation years. In specified circumstances, some income from the visiting parent or grandparent can also help meet the requirement. The exact thresholds, household size and documentation still matter.
Read IRCC 2026 host-income guidance Link to answerDoes buying insurance guarantee Super Visa approval?
No. Insurance is one required element; IRCC also evaluates eligibility, the host’s support and invitation, relationship, admissibility and other immigration requirements. Purchasing insurance does not guarantee a visa, entry to Canada or an immigration decision.
Check IRCC eligibility Link to answerIs there an age limit for Super Visa insurance?
There is no single age cap that applies to every provider. Available insurers, premiums, medical questions and plan terms change with the traveller’s age. Older visitors may have fewer options; compare live eligibility rather than assuming that every insurer covers all ages.
Check age-based options Link to answerIs a medical exam required to buy the insurance?
A medical exam is not automatically required to purchase every travel-medical policy, but some products require medical questionnaires or underwriting. Separately, IRCC requires Super Visa applicants to complete an immigration medical examination. Those are two different requirements.
Review IRCC applicant eligibility Link to answerWhat happens if the visa is refused or travel is postponed?
Ask the insurer promptly about cancellation or date changes. Policies may offer refunds for documented visa refusals and amendments before the effective date, but conditions, processing, fees and claims history vary. A full refund or a specific cancellation fee should never be assumed.
Ask the Cambridge advisor Link to answerCan I buy one policy for both parents?
Each Super Visa applicant must have qualifying insurance coverage. Some quoting platforms can compare two travellers together, but issued documents must clearly show the insured people and their eligible coverage. Confirm the insurer’s documentation and eligibility before submitting to IRCC.
Start a comparison Link to answerWhat does Super Visa and Visitors Insurance typically cover?
Depending on the contract, eligible unexpected emergency expenses may include hospital treatment, physician services, diagnostic tests, ambulance services and emergency repatriation. Benefits, limits and exclusions differ substantially. Emergency medical insurance is not a substitute for comprehensive provincial health coverage.
Read the Super Visa guide Link to answerWhat is usually excluded from emergency medical coverage?
Common exclusions include routine medical checkups, elective treatment, certain pre-existing conditions, non-emergency services and expenses outside covered benefit terms. Some policies restrict coverage if emergency assistance is not contacted promptly. The actual policy wording determines coverage.
Compare plan conditions Link to answerWhat counts as a pre-existing medical condition?
Definitions vary by policy, but a condition may be considered pre-existing because of symptoms, diagnosis, medical consultations, treatment, tests or medication before coverage begins. The look-back period and medical questionnaire must be reviewed; simply feeling healthy does not resolve coverage eligibility.
Link to answerCan diabetes, high blood pressure or heart conditions be covered?
Some plans can cover eligible stable pre-existing conditions, subject to stated stability requirements, exclusions and underwriting. Recent symptoms, investigations, changes in dose or medication, treatment or hospitalization may affect a claim. Never assume coverage based solely on the name of a medical condition.
Discuss medical eligibility Link to answerDoes a small medication change affect insurance stability?
It can. Some policies treat changes to medication, dose, symptoms or treatment as a break in stability, while other policies have specific exceptions. Ask the insurer to apply the actual policy definition to the traveller’s history before relying on coverage. Do not omit medical information.
Link to answerWhat is an insurance deductible and how does it affect price?
A deductible is the amount the insured pays toward eligible claims under the policy. A higher deductible can reduce the premium but can increase your out-of-pocket cost. Confirm whether it applies per claim, per condition or over the policy period, and whether it is in Canadian dollars.
Compare deductibles Link to answerDoes Super Visa insurance cover dental emergencies or eye care?
Some emergency medical policies include limited dental benefits related to accidental injury or sudden dental pain. Routine dental treatment, eye examinations and prescription eyewear are generally not core emergency benefits. Check the contract’s specific benefit limits and exclusions.
Link to answerCan parents travel to the United States while insured in Canada?
Some plans cover short side trips outside Canada under restrictions, but others may not. Coverage often depends on how much time is spent in Canada, destinations and the policy’s territory rules. Do not assume coverage for the United States, Mexico or another destination without checking the specific policy.
Link to answerShould I call the insurer before visiting a hospital?
For emergencies, seek urgent care immediately and contact the insurer’s emergency assistance number as soon as medically possible. Policies may require notification, coordination, pre-authorization or medical documents. Keep the policy number and emergency assistance line accessible.
Link to answerWhat documents are usually needed when filing a claim?
Insurers commonly request claim forms, original or itemized invoices, proof of payment, medical records, diagnostic results and travel or identification details. Requirements depend on the claim and policy. Save all records and follow the insurer’s deadlines and assistance instructions.
Link to answerHow is a live insurance premium calculated?
An insurer’s live rate generally considers age, policy start date, duration, coverage limit, deductible, medical information, plan options and payment method. This FAQ does not publish static or guaranteed premiums; use the quote system for current eligible offers.
Get live quotes Link to answerIs the cheapest policy always the best policy?
No. A low premium can reflect a larger deductible, different coverage limit, more restrictive pre-existing-condition rules or narrower benefits. First identify the required protection, then compare eligible policy wording, claims service, payment terms and total cost.
Link to answerWhat is the difference between Super Visa insurance and regular Visitors Insurance?
Super Visa insurance must meet IRCC’s specific minimum coverage, policy duration and insurer requirements. Standard Visitors to Canada medical insurance may be purchased for shorter or different trips with varying limits. A short visitor policy does not automatically qualify as Super Visa proof.
Compare visitor insurance Link to answerDo visitors to Ontario qualify for OHIP?
Visitors to Ontario ordinarily are not eligible for OHIP just because they are visiting family. OHIP eligibility depends on statutory criteria and residence or immigration status. Private emergency medical insurance can help with unexpected treatment costs, subject to the contract.
Visitors to Canada options Link to answerShould visitors buy insurance before arriving in Canada?
Usually, buying before arrival provides more opportunity to compare options and can avoid certain post-arrival waiting periods. Some plans bought after arrival apply an illness waiting period; no policy covers a medical event that occurred before coverage began. Review exact effective-date rules.
Compare visitor plans Link to answerCan someone already in Canada purchase visitors medical insurance?
Some insurers accept eligible applicants who are already in Canada, but an illness waiting period, medical questionnaire, exclusions or other limitations may apply. Coverage is not retroactive. Check whether the plan can start when needed before relying on it.
Check availability Link to answerIs Visitors Insurance available for people over age 80 or 85?
Availability varies considerably among insurers. Higher age bands may have more medical questions, reduced plan choices, higher premiums or exclusions. The live quote is based on the traveller’s exact age and eligibility rather than a universal maximum age.
Request age-specific comparisons Link to answerCan I extend or renew Visitors Insurance?
Many insurers allow eligible extensions or a new policy if requested before expiry. Extensions may have health-status, claim-history and timing requirements. Do not assume an extension automatically preserves the same protection or pre-existing-condition eligibility.
Link to answerDo newcomers waiting for provincial health coverage need insurance?
Some newcomers or returning residents may have a period without provincial coverage, depending on eligibility and enrolment. A suitable temporary medical policy can help bridge eligible emergency expenses, but coverage for people already resident in Canada is product-specific.
Explore visitors/newcomer insurance Link to answerDoes international student insurance work the same as Visitors Insurance?
No. Student plans may include benefits and eligibility conditions tailored to study permits, schools, program dates and provincial health coverage. Check any institution-specific requirements and compare them separately from Super Visa insurance.
Student insurance information Link to answerDoes my credit card travel insurance cover visiting parents?
Often not. Credit card coverage may apply to the cardholder under specific trip-length, age and purchase conditions, rather than to visiting parents. It may not meet Super Visa insurance requirements. Read the certificate and verify eligible insured persons, benefit limits and duration.
Link to answerWhat is term life insurance and who is it for?
Term life insurance generally provides a death benefit during a selected term, such as 10, 20 or 30 years, if contractual requirements are satisfied. It is commonly considered for mortgages, dependants and income replacement when protection is needed for a defined period.
Explore Cambridge term life options Link to answerWhat is the difference between term and whole life insurance?
Term life typically focuses on coverage for a chosen period and often starts with lower premiums for equivalent death benefits. Whole life is designed to provide lifetime coverage while required premiums are paid and contract conditions are met; some policies also accumulate cash value. The appropriate choice depends on goals, cost and policy design.
Read about whole life Link to answerWhat is universal life insurance?
Universal life is a form of permanent insurance combining lifelong protection with a policy account and flexible design features under the contract. Charges, performance, funding and tax rules can be complex. It is not automatically a better fit than term or whole life for every household.
Request a life insurance review Link to answerHow much life insurance does a family need?
The appropriate amount depends on debts, future living expenses, childcare, education goals, existing insurance, savings and the period dependants may need support. Start with a financial-needs estimate, then review affordability, beneficiaries, exclusions and underwriting.
Use the life insurance calculator Link to answerWhat does critical illness insurance pay for?
Critical illness insurance typically pays a lump sum following a covered diagnosis if the policy’s specific definitions, survival periods and other conditions are met. It does not pay for every serious medical condition. Review covered conditions, exclusions and partial benefits, if any.
Critical illness information Link to answerHow is disability insurance different from critical illness insurance?
Disability insurance is generally designed to replace part of earned income when a qualifying illness or injury prevents work, subject to definitions, waiting periods and benefit periods. Critical illness insurance usually provides a defined lump sum for a covered diagnosis, regardless of the same work-disability test.
Explore disability planning Link to answerIs Super Visa medical insurance also life insurance?
No. Super Visa emergency medical insurance is mainly for eligible unexpected health-care expenses during a visit. Life insurance is a separate contract designed primarily to provide a death benefit. Emergency repatriation or return-of-remains coverage should not be confused with life insurance.
Link to answerCan life insurance applications be completed online?
Some insurers offer electronic quotes and applications, but requirements vary by coverage amount, age, health and product. Medical evidence, identity verification, underwriting and suitability assessment may still be required. Contact the advisor for the correct application route.
Ask about applying Link to answerShould I save in a TFSA or an RRSP?
A TFSA generally allows tax-free investment growth and withdrawals, while an RRSP may offer a deduction on contributions and generally taxes withdrawals. The right priority depends on your current versus future tax rate, available room, employer matching, benefits and goals.
Open the Canadian calculator hub Link to answerWhat is an FHSA and who may benefit?
A First Home Savings Account is a registered account for eligible first-time home buyers that may combine deductible contributions with tax-free qualifying withdrawals. Eligibility, annual and lifetime limits and account timing matter. Confirm current CRA rules before opening or contributing.
Explore tax and savings calculators Link to answerHow does an RESP help with education savings?
A Registered Education Savings Plan can grow funds for eligible post-secondary education and may qualify for government education incentives, subject to plan rules. Contributions, grants, withdrawals, beneficiary eligibility and investment risk all warrant review.
Open RESP savings calculator Link to answerWhat are segregated funds?
Segregated funds are investment funds offered through insurance contracts and may include contractual maturity or death-benefit guarantees, potentially with beneficiary-designation features. Guarantees have terms and limitations, and fees and market risk still matter. They are not equivalent to guaranteed bank deposits.
Discuss investment options Link to answerAre financial calculator investment returns guaranteed?
No. Calculators illustrate assumptions and potential scenarios, not promised returns. Actual outcomes can differ due to market volatility, fees, taxes, contribution timing and inflation. Compare conservative as well as optimistic scenarios before making decisions.
Open investment calculator Link to answerIs borrowing to invest suitable for everyone?
No. Leverage adds interest cost, potential margin or repayment risk, and the possibility of losing money while still owing the loan. It is a higher-risk strategy requiring affordability, time horizon, tax and investment suitability review.
